Kundalini Syndrome: The Dangers Of Unpreparedness

Kundalini is described as lying "coiled" at the base of the spine, represented as either a goddess or sleeping serpent waiting to be awakened.

Kundalini in yogic theory is a primal energy, or shakti, located at the base of the spine. Different spiritual traditions teach methods of "awakening" kundalini for the purpose of reaching spiritual enlightenment.

Many individuals whose Kundalini has been unexpectedly unleashed do not know what is happening, and the prevailing social ignorance about this multidimensional transformative process makes it hard to find medical or alternative health practitioners or spiritual advisors who recognize the symptoms, particularly when they are strongly physical.

Many people know that the risen Kundalini throws open the gates to a wed variety of mystical, paranormal and magical vistas but few realize it can also dramatically impact the physical self. A large percentage of individuals affected have reported long bouts of anomalous illness as well as radical mental, emotional, interpersonal, psychic, spiritual and lifestyle changes. Over and again one hears stories of frustrating, sometimes desperate visits to doctors, healers, counselors, etc. who neither understood nor were able to help with the myriad pains and problems catalyzed by raging Kundalini.

The following are common manifestations of the risen Kundalini:

  • Muscle twitches, cramps or spasmsIn hac habitasse platea purus dictumst.
  • Itching, vibrating, prickling, tingling, stinging or crawling sensations
  • Episodes of extreme hyperactivity or, conversely, overwhelming fatigue
  • Intensified or diminished sexual desires
  • Headaches, pressures within the skull
  • Racing heartbeat, pains in the chest
  • Numbness or pain in the limbs (particularly the left foot and leg)
  • Emotional outbursts; rapid mood shifts; seemingly unprovoked or excessive episodes of grief, fear, rage, depression
  • Hearing an inner sound or sounds, classically described as a flute, drum, waterfall, birds singing, bees buzzing but which may also sound like roaring, whooshing, or thunderous noises or like ringing in the ears
  • Mental confusion; difficulty concentrating
  • Ecstasy, bliss and intervals of tremendous joy, love, peace and compassion
  • Psychic experiences: extrasensory perception; out-of-body experiences; past life memories; astral travel; direct awareness of auras and chakras; contact with spirit guides through inner voices, dreams or visions; healing powers
  • Insight into one's own essence
  • Enlightenment experiences
  • Sense of a more expansive reality, transcendent awareness
  • Energy rushes or immense electricity circulating the body Nam fringilla dapibus mollis dapibus.
  • Intense heat or cold
  • Involuntary bodily movements: jerking, tremors, shaking; feeling an inner force pushing one into postures or moving one's body in unusual ways. (May be misdiagnosed as epilepsy, restless legs syndrome, or PLMD)
  • Alterations in eating and sleeping patterns
  • Digestive system problems
  • Pains and blockages anywhere; often in the back and neck
  • Spontaneous vocalizations (including laughing and weeping) — are as unintentional and uncontrollable as hiccoughs
  • Altered states of consciousness: heightened awareness; spontaneous trance states; mystical experiences (if the individual's prior belief system is too threatened by these, they can lead to bouts of psychosis or self-grandiosity)
  • Heat, strange activity, and/or blissful sensations in the head, particularly in the crown area
  • Ecstasy, bliss and intervals of tremendous joy, love, peace and compassion
  • Increased creativity: new interests in self-expression and spiritual communication through music, art, poetry, etc.
  • Intensified understanding and sensitivity
  • Enhanced awareness of one's energetic environment (including "impressions" from others)

Some remedies for kundalini syndrome include:

*Stop energy-generation exercises and meditations temporarily.

  • Go on a vata-pacifying regime (except no flesh foods) until you stabilize.
  • Eat bigger heavier meals will help you feel more grounded and settled.
  • Take a salt bath daily.
  • Perform energetic sweeping, especially of affected areas of the body daily.
  • Get close to nature: walk barefoot on grass, hug (or sit up against) a tree.
  • Do some gardening.
  • Do some challenging, heavy labor, but make sure not to overtax yourself or exceed your limits.
  • Get adequate rest; avoid late night activities.
  • Avoid stimulants: alcohol, drugs, coffee, tea, etc. should be avoided
  • Take a break from your spiritual practice, especially if it involves mantra or chakra meditation.
  • Sweet, heavy herbs, rich in the earth mahabhuta, may be helpful: Ashwagandha, Shatavari and Licorice will tone down Kundalini’s depredations.
